Why Auckland houses go green

Mild, wet winters are good for gardens and hard on houses. This is where it shows first.

  • The south side goes green.

    South-facing walls and fences get little winter sun, so they stay damp. Algae and mould move in, and the paint turns a dull green.

  • Concrete tiles grow lichen.

    The grey-green and orange spots on a concrete tile roof are lichen, and the soft green clumps are moss. Rain won’t shift either of them.

    Roof treatment

  • Gutters fill and spill.

    Leaves, moss and grit off the roof wash into the gutters. Once they block, water spills over the fascia and down the walls.

    Gutter cleaning

  • Shaded concrete gets slippery.

    Paths and drives out of the sun grow moss and algae, and they’re slippery when they’re wet.
